The parking brake shoe is a nifty component that keeps your car in a stable position when the emergency or parking brake is used. This component is often found in modern cars with rear disc brakes or rotors. Cars made before 1999 may not have the parking brake shoe, but instead, use the brake shoes inside the rear drums for the same purpose.
Note:
– Only cars with rear rotors have parking brake shoes.
– An expert mechanic will determine whether a replacement is necessary based on the thickness of the brake shoe
– If only debris is present on the parking brake shoe, a simple cleaning may be all that’s needed.
Remove rear rotors and examine parking brake shoes
New ones should be installed if thickness falls below 30%.
Clean as may be required
Ensure hand brake operates properly
In optimal operation, the parking brake shoes ensure that your car stays in position and prevents it from rolling when the parking brake is engaged. However, they may also wear after extended periods of use, and thus become less effective in creating enough pressure on the rotors to prevent car movement. This leaves your car a safety hazard to passersby and buildings.
Consider Replacing The Emergency / Parking Brake Shoe When:
– It appears the parking brake fails to release
– The car does not hold after putting the parking brake
– Parking brake fails to work completely
Our Recommendation:
It is advised to inspect the parking brake shoes when carrying out brake pad or rotor replacement activities. The parking brake shoes should be cleaned and adjusted if they don’t appear damaged. However, if the parking brake lever feels awkward, or applying the parking brakes does not stop the car from rolling, having an expert mechanic assess the braking system is your best next step.
