The brake fluid is an integral component of your car’s brake system. When the brake pedal is applied, this fluid forces the brake pads to firmly press against the brake rotors, ultimately resulting in slowing down your car to a halt.
However, it’s not uncommon for the brake fluid to absorbs particles and become contaminated over time, causing reduced efficiency and poor brake system activity. A flush is done to remove contaminated fluid and replacing it with a new one. This restores breaking performance for safe and hassle-free driving.
Note:
Bleeding your brake system can be done using atmospheric pressure and/or a hand-held vacuum pump. Sure, they may not be as powerful as a pressure bleeder, but these alternatives work just fine and are industry approved options. You may also consider hiring a mechanic to get the job done professionally.
Inspect and drain contaminated brake fluid
Replace with a new, clean brake fluid
Bleed the entire brake system
Contaminated surfaces during the bleeding process should be cleaned
Ensure there are no fluid leaks
Inspect the brake rotors, brake pads and hoses
Test drive to ensure proper functioning of the brake system
If ignored, contaminated brake fluid may cause extensive repairs in the long run. You may also be exposed to road risks as the efficiency of the brake system will be affected.
Brake system flush may be needed when:
– You notice a change in brake fluid color
– It feels spongy applying the brake pedal
– Brake system performance deteriorates
Our Recommendation:
The maintenance schedule specified by the manufacturer should be strictly adhered to. A best practice would be to carry out this service every 36 months or after driving 24,000 miles. Your choice of brake fluid is dependent on the recommendation of your car manufacturer. Hence, use only regular fluids and not silicone based alternatives if your manufacturer recommends the former.
