Many components work in synergy to power the braking system in your car. The brake drum is one such component. A smooth metal cylindrical housing, this drum is attached to the hub of the rear wheel. While newer cars have rotors on all four wheels, older models may come with drums and not rotors at the rear wheels.
Your car slows or stops when friction occurs between the brake shoes and drums. As occurs with many other car parts, brake drums can wear out after extended periods of use, in which case their ability to dissipate the heat generated by the braking system becomes severely poor.
Note:
– Brake drums reduce in size as they wear out. This indicator often helps in determining when a replacement is needed.
– When faulty, brake drums can also cause brake shoe damage
– Damaged brake drums can only be replaced and not repaired
– It is advisable to replace both brake drums, even if only one is faulty.
Braking causes the back of the car to shake
Handbrake holds poorly
Car pulls awkwardly when brakes are applied
The rear brakes generate unusual noise
The brake drums rub against the shoes to slow down your car when the brake pedal is applied. Damaged brake drums make braking inefficient and slow. Hence changing your brake drum when the need arises ensures the brake system operates optimally and also keeps you safe during an emergency or when driving tricky terrains.
How It’s Done
– Determine brake drum thickness and remove them if they run lower than specifications.
– Inspect brake springs, wheel cylinder, clips and adjustment parts
– Lubricate the backing plate
– Test drive vehicle to ensure brake system works perfectly.
Recommendation:
Seek professional help when you notice clear fluid dripping from underneath your car. This is important as chances are high that you may have a leaking brake fluid which can hinder brake performance and cause brake failure if left unattended.
