Tips for Keeping Your Car Running Smooth
In order to keep your car running at its best, it’s important to keep up with routine maintenance and inspections. By properly maintaining your vehicle, you’ll reduce future repair costs, optimize your car’s performance, maintain its value and extend its life. Here are Uchanics’ Top 7 car parts that require regular maintenance and inspections:
1. The Engine
Number one is of course the heart of your car, the engine. You know those love movies where a heartbroken lover cannot think straight and is bedridden due to a crippling breakup… well this is how your car’s engine feels when you don’t regularly perform oil and filter changes (cue sad music.) But all jokes aside, your car’s engine is very important to the correct operation of your car, to keep your engine running efficiently please have the following four engine based services performed regularly:
- 1. Change oil, air and fuel filter.
- 2. Check the PCV valve for proper operation.
- 3. Check spark plugs wires.
- 4. Don’t drive with your gas tank on empty.
2. The Transmission
Number two on the list is attached to your car’s engine; number two is your car’s transmission. The transmission transfers energy from the car’s engine to the car’s wheels, causing them to turn. Regular checkups to ensure that your transmission fluid is topped up and to ensure that there are no leaks or damages will help you to shift from park to drive with no issues.
3. The Battery And The Alternator
Your car’s battery and your car’s alternator work together to supply the energy that is needed to start your car’s engine and keep it running along with all of the other electrical components on and in your car. Proper maintenance means keeping your battery clean and securely in place so that it doesn’t move or vibrate while your car is moving. All terminal connections should also be clean and tight.
4. The Emission System
A car’s emission system extends from the front of your car all the way to the back of your vehicle. The main purpose of the emission system is to move exhaust away from the engine and passenger cabin and to your car’s tailpipes/exhaust tips. Exhaust systems and mufflers that have holes in them will cause your car to have poor acceleration and be extremely loud while driving. Having your emissions system looked at annually will help your car to run smooth, silently and effectively.
5. The Brake System
A car that car drive is sublime but a car that can stop… well that is beyond sublime. Your car’s braking system is absolutely essentially for the safety of not only you and your passengers but for every person, animal, and object on the road. There are two types of braking systems that modern cars use, one being disc brakes and the other being drum brakes. Both drum and disc brakes rely on friction to slowdown and or stop a vehicle, this friction is supplied by a brake pad or a brake shoe.
When brakes need to be changed they give certain warning signs, you might hear squeaking or grinding noise every time you apply your brakes. Other signs include a loose feeling/ spongy pedal, this may signal air in your car’s hydraulic system. If your car shakes when slowing/stopping at high speeds it could mean a worn or warped rotor. Your braking system is very important to your safety and any time you notice that something might be wrong we recommend that you have one of the professionals at Uchanics come to your home or work and inspect your braking system for you.
6. The Cooling System
Your car’s cooling system regulates engine temperature by pumping coolant between the engine and radiator to keep your car at an ideal operating temperature. A Uchanics’ service technician is able to help keep your cooling system functioning by inspecting the coolant levels in the reservoir tanks, inspecting the hoses for wear and tear and providing a coolant flush and refill service, in which we drain old and dirty coolant and replace it with clean, new, coolant.
7. The Suspension System
Your car’s suspension system is made up of shocks, struts, springs, ball joints, tires, steering and more. These parts work together to keep you comfortable, safe and in control when driving.
Because all of these systems are so intimately connected, a symptom in one of these parts may in reality be a problem in another area of the suspension system. A perfect example is uneven tire wear between two front tires might just be tire pressure being either too high or too low but it could also be an alignment issue depending on the character of the wear. To ensure that your suspension system is functioning optimally you should have your steering and suspension systems inspected.
